IBM Unveils ‘Brain-Like’ Computer Chip

IBM Corporation has unveiled a new ‘brain-like’ computer chip that can interpret complex data and other features of the brain to perform calculations. This chip is as small as postal stamp and it is capable of processing massive amount of data. It can handle inputs from multiple sources at the same time while processing the data.

IBM
The announcement comes month after company unveiled a $3 billion investment over the next five years in chip research and development to find a game-changing computer chip to revolutionise the hardware unit of the company
.
Unlike other chips, IBM’s new chip version processes data in real time rather than operating on pre-written paths. Thus, this new chip is capable of dealing with ambiguity and consumes as low energy as hearing aid. Built on Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co Ltd’s 28nm process technology, the chip only consumes 70 MW of energy.
Company has put almost a decade of research in inventing this chip. The chip aims to bridge the gap between human brain’s power and existing computers.
The company said that the chip has one million programmable neurones and could allow a thermometer to scan and smell chemical signals and deliver a result, or help searching and rescuing people using robot during disaster.
If IBM succeeds in implementing this brainy chip then it can power the mobile phones to handle multi-sensory processing. It can also help in 3G integration, sensor and logic technologies and development in memory of mobile devices.
